The Incomparable Jesus
Pastor Gail – Welcome
1. The Word says in John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” We want to welcome you tonight, but more than that, we want to welcome the Lord Jesus.
2. Because where He is, and He is everywhere, is everything we need, everything we need. And we get to celebrate Him tonight. What the price He paid to give us everlasting freedom in life. How wonderful is that? So, we invite you to turn to someone and smile. Amen.
3. And then we will tell you at the end of the service tonight, we will be lighting our candles to celebrate the light of the world as alive. And so would you please just be kind of careful with the wax, because it’s kind of hard to get off the chairs.
Anton Beukes – Opening Prayer
4. Let’s pray together. Holy Father we thank you that we can be in your presence this evening. Thank you that we can invite you. But Lord, you invited us into your world. Please open the doors to your temple. And through the blood of Jesus, we can enter. Thank you, Lord, for this privilege. Thank you that we can worship you. Thank you that we can worship your Son, who died for our sins. And also, was victorious over death and sin. Thank you, Lord, that we can worship you, and praise you with all our hearts. And thank you, Lord Jesus, that you are worthy that we can pray this in your name. And the people of the Lord say, Amen.
Pastor Gail – Reading the Word
5. If you would remain standing as we worship the Lord.
6. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord. Reading the word of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Amen.
7. You may be seated. It’s just probably for those of you that are not from Greece. Particularly, if you’re from a Western country, because I grew up in a Western country, I thought Christmas was the biggest time of the year. But when you come to Greece, or when you come to a country with an Orthodox calendar, we find out that Easter is the biggest celebration on the calendar. Amen.
8. And it really should be. Christmas begins the story. But Easter tells the rest of the story, Amen. It shares with us the victory of Jesus Christ. So, we’re thrilled that you’re with us tonight. And for our local family, and if you happen to be visiting here, there will not be church at 10.30 in the morning. Because we will finish tonight, which is tomorrow, Sunday morning. So, we will be celebrating through Saturday and Sunday morning that the King is alive.
9. And so, we hope you enjoy somewhere lamb with family and friends, and a lot of the talk is about the victory of the Lord. We’d like to give you an opportunity to give an offering to the Lord this evening.
10. When we think about the incomparable Jesus, there really is no one else like him. And I think we can see in the world today, that ultimately man does not have the answers for this world. There is no man or woman, no human, that can settle all of these world’s problems and heal every need. But the incomparable Jesus, one day, will bring peace that passes all understanding. So I’m going to invite Stavros, he’ll pray for our offering this evening.
11. We want to take a moment just to welcome all of you that this is not your church and you’re just visiting here in Greece. We’re just really pleased that you’re with us. And I know there’s a large group of Praying Pelicans with us tonight. Welcome.
12. If you’re like me the first time I heard there’s a group called Praying Pelicans? What is that? And I think, George, George, will you just wave your hand? At the end of service when we’re upstairs, actually, George, if you’ll stand. George is a great friend of this church. You can ask George while you’re breaking your red egg, what are the Praying Pelicans? And you might just want to join.
13. Amen. We’re so glad to worship the Lord with you. And feel free with the next song to sit or stand. However, the important thing tonight is that we honor Jesus.
14. History is filled with influential figures, leaders, philosophers, and reformers who shape nations and ideas, yet among them all, Jesus stands alone. The story is made of the most important and most important things. For those of you who are with us today, we honor the most important and most important things.
15. What makes Jesus truly uncomfortable is his sacrificial death and victorious resurrection. He did what no one else could do. He conquered sin and death.
Pastor Brian – Main Message
1. Lord, tonight we rejoice in your incomparable name, and in you, the incomparable one, so tonight as we turn our attention and our affections to you, Lord, Lord, we just pray that you would honor our time, and our togetherness with you, as we discover more about who you are. Lord, this night is about you, it’s about your death, but more so it’s about your resurrection, that, Lord, you are not to be compared with anybody in history, because of who you are, and because what you have done, and we bless you tonight, Lord, we bless you tonight, in Jesus’ name, amen, amen.
2. Throughout this week, we have been talking about the incomparable names of Jesus. Last Sunday, Palm Sunday, we talked about four names that revealed his divine nature, and the fact that they’re more than just names, they are characteristics about the Lord, that when we lean into them, when we meditate on them, they build up and encourage our spirit.
3. So, we talked about the fact that he’s the Son of God, and we talked about the fact that he’s Immanuel God with us, and that he is the Word, the ‘Logos,’ the actual reasoning of God, he’s the living expression of God, and we talked about the fact that he’s the Alpha and the Omega. He’s got us from beginning to end, and he exists in all of those places, even as we experience them.
4. On Wednesday night, Leto shared with us that he’s the King of kings. He’s supreme over all. We heard that he’s the Lord of lords, he’s the authority above every authority, and he’s the Messiah, the Christ, the anointed one that was promised. And he’s the Lion of Judah. So, we learned of his authority and his Kingship.
5. On Thursday night, we had an intimate night where we talked about the names that show his intimate relationship with us. He’s the bread of life, our spiritual nourishment. He’s the light of the world, he brings truth and guidance in all ways and all things. He declared himself the way, the truth and the life. And then we talked about the fact that he’s the true vine, that in him, from him, we get all of our nourishment.
6. Then Friday morning, while the morning bells rang, we talked about his role as Savior. Anton shared with us that he is the Savior. He saves us from sin, God’s people should say amen. We learned that he’s the Redeemer. He pays all the price for our freedom. We learned that he’s the Lamb of God, the ultimate sacrificial offering. Nothing greater will be ever done for you in your life, then that the Lamb of God gave his life. But then we learned also that he is the Good Shepherd. He guides us, he protects us.
7. Now, that’s a lot. So, if you didn’t write it all down when you were here the nights before and most of you weren’t, you can get them from me afterward because we really encouraged each other. Don’t just hear names, don’t just hear titles, but consider what these things say about Jesus and who he is to you. Because we believe it will grow your spiritual life, I’ve enjoyed that meditation this week.
8. Earlier we heard Pastor Gail and Stavros read this, but I want to say it again, because we’re moving from the names, the incomparable names of Jesus to the incomparable Jesus. Because tonight I want you to realize that there is no one, nothing ever in history that compares to Jesus.
9. They told us that history is filled with influential figures. Leaders, philosophers, reformers, religious icons, history is full of people who shaped nations and ideas. You can name all your favorites, but among them all, Jesus stands alone. I’m sure you’ve heard it many times before, but it’s worth remembering again. Only one man in history ever changed the calendar.
10. We had before Christ, you can change it to whatever you want to today before a common era, the common era is still before Christ, and then we had after death. Why? Why did the whole world organize itself for centuries around that concept? Because only one man ever changed history the way that Jesus did. Because what makes him incomparable is not only what he taught, but who he is, and what he accomplished. But before what he accomplished is the who he is. So, I’m going to give you 3 things to kind of put your thoughts around tonight.
11. The first one is this. Only Jesus in history could claim to be divine. He entered history with a divine identity. John 1:14 declares it for us. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” And who was the Word? “The Word was with God and the Word was God.” Only Jesus claims divinity. And you can deny that for him. But in doing that, you have to admit, as one theologian said, he is either truthful or he is a liar or he is a maniac. Make your choice. Because you can’t find any gray area in there.
12. Either Jesus is divine or he is the greatest liar in all of history. Which do you choose? I believe his divinity. I believe that the Word became flesh. And dwelt among us. He was not, as many would say, merely inspired by God. He was a great philosopher. He was a great theologian. He was a great teacher.
13. But surely, he was not God. No, he was not inspired by God. He was God in human form. Many others pointed toward truth. I don’t deny that. You can read through history many pointed to truth. But Jesus boldly said, I am the way. I am the truth. And I am the life. And this claim sets him apart from any teacher who ever lived. So tonight, I challenge you. To just rest in your own mind. And ask yourself, who do you say he is? He’s divine.
14. The second thing that makes him different from anyone else is that he was perfect and sinless. His life was marked by perfect love and by perfect sinlessness. The Bible tells us that even his enemies could not accuse him. 1 Peter 2:22, tells us, “That he committed no sin nor was deceit found in his mouth.” We live in a world that is marked by failure and brokenness.
15. Pastor Gail can tell you that for years and years I was a news junkie. I would watch news almost 24 hours a day. I am still a news junkie. I just only read it now. Because I can’t watch these lunatics on any side of any debate that are trying to feed me their nonsense. But I have more and more and more felt the brokenness of this world. I feel like even the best of people, the best people I know, the best of us, are just confused. It’s just way too much craziness. Way too much brokenness. From all sides we’re calling evil righteousness and righteousness evil.
16. So where do I look? I look to the one who lived without any flaw. The one unmatched in history. Who never led one person in the wrong direction. I was thinking about that earlier today. Think about a leader of any kind. Who could say, I never led anybody astray? I never spoke a word. That gave them the wrong idea. I never said follow me into anything that was not right.
17. There’s only one in history. I think there’s only one in history. And his name is Jesus. An unmatched reality in all of human history. I don’t know if we dwell on that enough. What voices are we listening to? Versus what the one flawless one would say.
18. And then the third thing I thought was this. He was ultimately sacrificial. That first word is a big word. He was ultimately sacrificial. Of course, his death. His victorious resurrection. So far, the only person in history that can say that. He did what no one else could do. He conquered sin and death. Romans 5:8. “God demonstrates his own love toward us. In that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
19. Our TV is going to turn off. It’s over there. No, that one’s going to turn off now too. We’ve been practicing too long today. This one shut off again. Well, people don’t know as you bounce off each other when you turn one off. Thank you.
20. God demonstrates his own love toward us. In that while we were still sinners. God demonstrates his own love toward us. Just keep that thing Lars.
21. Hallelujah. Another place in Scripture says, “While we were enemies.” Have you ever stopped to consider yourself an enemy? Of God. An enemy of the Lord. That’s a big hard word. But even in our darkest moments, of hating who God might be, He said. “I will die, for you.” Ultimate sacrifice.
22. Another Scripture says, “A man will lay down his life for a friend.” That’s the easy part. It’s easy to lay down my life for somebody I love. But to lay down my life for the one who doesn’t even recognize me. Or who doesn’t like who I am. Or who does evil things toward me.
23. While we were that, he died for us. And the story didn’t end at the cross. Matthew 28:6 says “He’s not here. He has risen. Just as he said.” So, he did this thing for you and for me. He did this thing for us. And then he said I’m going to carry it through to its completion. So that whatever he has begun with you. He’s going to be faithful to that until he sees you in eternity.
24. He said it. He did it. And he lives in it today. And because he lives in it today. We live in it today. This is what makes him in comparable to anybody else in all of history. Because nobody else has ever offered themselves that way nor could they offer themselves that way.
25. So that even today, his influence continues to transform lives in every culture. And in every generation. You will not go anywhere in this earth today that Christ is not transforming people in this earth.
26. Even where we talk about unreached people, we consistently find out that he has been reaching people in every place on every part of this earth. Kingdoms rise, and kingdoms fall. But his reign endures forever.
27. He’s incomparable in history. Because he’s more than a historical figure. He is the living savior. When you study him. It’s not like studying others. You’re not studying something of the past. To know him today, is not just to know the past. It’s to encounter the eternal living God. Jesus is unlike anybody else in history.
28. Because he’s divine. Because he’s perfect and sinless. And because he was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. And you will find no other character in history that can match up to that.
29. He is the living God. Jesus, Name above all names. Beautiful Savior. Glorious Lord. Immanuel, God with us. Blessed Redeemer. And living Word. That’s Jesus. Who do you consider him to be tonight? Because you cannot match him to anything or anyone, in all of history. There’s One, One and his Name is Jesus. Amen.
Pastor Gail – Closeout
30. You’re not here by accident tonight. Even Praying Pelicans, you’re supposed to be here with us. So, we’re blessed that you’re here. But more than that, the Father, Son, and the Spirit are here tonight, and they want to speak to you. And that’s an awesome thing. To know that there’s someone that wants to speak to you and is always listening to you when you speak to him.
31. Jesus is very present. If you’re here and you’ve never asked him to come into your life, maybe you know his name. But you’re curious about this thing, what it means to have a Savior. It’s very simple. Just ask him. ‘I want to know you. I’d like you to come into my life. I want to know what it means, to have freedom from my fear, freedom from worry. I want to know what it is. To know someone that never leaves me.’
32. While we sing, it’s almost time to celebrate the Anastasi, the resurrection. But truly, Jesus did that over 2,000 years ago. And he wants to come and live in our life. I’m excited, about one day, seeing the one that loves me best. I love to tell people who are married, it’s nice to be married. I was married. But it’s true. My husband went to sleep at night. He slept. He didn’t see me. He didn’t hear me breathing. He didn’t see the hairs fall out of my head.
33. But you know what the Bible says about Jesus? He watches over us all the time. He never slumbers nor sleeps. There is no one else that sees you always. And isn’t it true? Has anybody else ever counted all the hairs you’ve lost on your head? That’s how much he loves you. Nobody else loves me like that. Jesus sees even every hair that falls from my head. And you know what else it says? Every tear I cry. He has them in his presence.
34. Oh, my goodness, such amazing love. I just want to speak the name of Jesus. Oh Jesus, come into our life. We celebrate who you are.
35. Lord, I’m going to pray right now Lord. Lord, if there is someone in the room that is struggling with depression. Someone in the room that’s just been very anxious. Right now, we call on your name, Jesus. Lord, we pray that your peace, Lord, will just come to bring release from depression.
36. We pray for that right now in the name of Jesus. Lord, we pray for all of those in the war-torn situations right now, God. We pray, O God, that the anxiety, Lord, that somehow, you’ll send angels, God. To bring peace, God, to those hearts, God. We want to pray for the children, Lord. O God, that you will, Lord, cause them to know, Lord. Even if the world’s gone crazy, you love them. O God, let them feel your presence around them right now.
37. We speak the name of Jesus, into these situations right now. I know it may seem kind of crazy to some of you, but the Jesus I know, is so real, that he can send angels right now. And he desires to just make those children feel safe, no matter what’s going on around them. Do you believe it? Do you believe it? That’s our Jesus.
38. Amen and amen. We’re getting ready to light our resurrection candles. Because the light of the world is with us, amen. He is the King above all kings. And we’re going to do it a little bit different this year. We’re going to light and we’re going to ask you to begin to go upstairs, because we want you to hear the fireworks.
39. Most of you from the West have never heard fireworks at midnight on Easter Sunday morning. And you will see people in the streets, from other churches, carrying candles. Because the light of the world is alive. Amen, amen, amen. Christos Anesti, Christ is risen. He is risen indeed! Jesus Christ is risen. Alithos Anesti. Christ is risen indeed. Amen.
